Maria discovered pottery through curiosity — enrolling in a class at her local art league in Connecticut. After just one session at the wheel, she was captivated. Less than a year later, as COVID-19 reshaped daily life, she moved to the Midwest, a transition that deepened her connection to ceramics and fueled her creative growth.
Though her foundation began in a studio classroom, Maria is largely self-taught. Her practice has continued to evolve through workshops and trainings with leading ceramic artists across the country. She draws constant inspiration from the mentors and makers who challenge and guide her along the way.
The name Stone Fire Studio speaks to the transformation at the heart of ceramics. The word stone traces back to its Germanic roots, meaning "to thicken" or "to grow firm" — much like clay as it dries. Only through fire does that clay become something lasting: strong, enduring, and alive with the imprint of heat and time.
The ancient process of wood firing connects Maria to generations of makers who turned to fire to reveal the strength hidden within clay. Each piece reflects that conversation between stone and fire — a balance of what is grounded and what evolves.
"What drives my work is a desire to bring artistry and beauty into everyday moments through functional ceramics. I am deeply inspired by both nature and science — influences that appear in my mountain scapes, floral motifs, and surface patterns."
Stone Fire Studio is based in North Liberty, Iowa. Maria sells her work through this site, her Etsy shop, and at select craft shows throughout the Midwest each year.
Wood-fire kiln firing — community, patience, and a whole lot of heat.
Maria doesn't run the studio alone — she has poodles on the payroll.
Piper, the Chief Operations Officer, enjoys full access and roams in and out of the studio as she pleases, overseeing big-picture morale and general happiness. Lulu, the Production Supervisor, takes her role far more seriously — she'll fix you with a steady stare (or a well-timed side-eye) if you even think about leaving the studio before the work is done.
Together, they handle quality control, studio security, and occasional paw-print inspections, and are generously compensated in biscuits, cozy naps, and unlimited ear scratches.
Maria accepts custom orders. Whether it's a gift, a matching set, or a specific form or glaze in mind — reach out and start a conversation.
